Lorenzo Cain Signs with the Brewers

About an hour after acquiring Christian Yelich, the Milwaukee Brewers made another splash by signing Lorenzo Cain to a 5 year contract worth 80 million dollars. This will be Cain’s second stint with the Brewers organization, having previously played for them in 2010.

The 31 year old center fielder put up a slash line of .300/.363/.400, with a 115 WRC+. He was also an above average base runner, with 3.5 BsR, and an above average defender, with 5 DRS and 1.6 UZR. Cain has also been a consistent contributor for the past several seasons, putting up at least 2.5 fWAR every year since 2013, including 4.1 in 2017.

Milwaukee now has a surplus of outfielders, with Ryan Braun, Keon Broxton, Domingo Santana, Yelich, and Cain all having taken at least 400 plate appearances in 2017. As a result, we could expect a few additional moves involving Brewers outfielders in the coming weeks.

These two moves should raise the Brewers win total by 6 or 7, improving the likelihood of their contention in an increasingly interesting NL Central.
