White Sox place SS Tim Anderson on the 10 Day IL

During Friday’s night contest, SS Tim Anderson was pulled from the game due to a sore right hip. Anderson showed some ugly footwork on a couple fielding plays that drew clues that something wasn’t right. As a result Anderson was placed on the 10 Day IL with a groin strain. The flashy shortstop was off to a hot start this season slashing .333/.355/.567 with a .952 OPS, 1 HR and 4 doubles.

In the meantime utilityman Leury Garcia and IF Danny Mendick will cover shortstop duties. In reaction to the injury, the White Sox called up Catcher prospect Yermin Mercedes to the big league club. Mercedes showed off his power with four homers during the shortened spring training before the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2019, the 27 year old in AA/AAA slashed .317/.388/.581 with a .968 OPS, 23 HRs, 19 doubles and 80 RBIs. This will be the first time Mercedes has been on a major league team after spending 8 season in the minors with the Nationals, Orioles and White Sox affiliates.

This news is a major blow to the Pale Hose’s offense as the Sox are still waiting on OF Nomar Mazara to make his Sox debut and just recently lost RHPs Jimmy Lambert and Reynaldo Lopez to arm injuries. It will be crucial for TA7 to heal up and rejoin the White Sox to keep pace in the AL Central.
