The New York Yankees have just made a huge signing, solidifying that they have the best bullpen in the Major Leagues by signing RHP and New York City native Adam Ottavino to a 3-year, $27 million dollar contract according to Jeff Passan of ESPN.
Ottavino has been one of the best relievers in baseball over the last couple years. Last season, Ottavino went 6-4 with a 2.43 ERA, struck out 112 batters (seventh amongst all MLB relievers), and held opposing hitters to a .158 batting average in 77 2/3 innings. In seven seasons with Colorado, pitching in a notorious hitters ballpark, the righty posted a 17-18 record with a 3.41 ERA in 361 appearances.
Ottavino joins an already dangerous Yankees bullpen which consists of Aroldis Chapman, Dellin Betances, Zach Britton, Chad Green, and Jonathan Holder.
Ottavino is the only pitcher in MLB history to wear the uniform number 0. Should he continue to wear it for the Yankees, he will be the first Yankee EVER to wear the number. He will also be the only person to be able to wear a single digit number with numbers 1 through 9 all being retired, most recently with Derek Jeter’s number 2. Ottavino will be the third former Rockies player to come to the Bronx this offseason, joining Troy Tulowitzki and DJ LeMahieu.
Ottavino also made the headlines last month stating that he would strike Babe Ruth out every time he faced him.
